The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered more than 200,000 state employees to take two days off each month without pay. In some cases, state workers will be allowed to "bank" their two days worth of hours and utilize them as they were regular leave credits. Meaning, employees may be taking what is aproximately a 10 percent pay cut, but will be allowed to utilize "Furlough Hours" like vacation, equating to an extra 24 days of vacation per year. Also, the state has yet to implement a hiring freeze, allowing the state departments to fill any vacant positions as normal. Therefore, job seekers are encouraged to continue their job search with the State of California. Note: the salaries listed may be the base salary and won't necessary reflect take home pay after the furlough cuts.
The Department of Personnel Administration has released "Answers to Employee Questions on the Furlough" which is available from their website:

The governor's Executive Order S-16-08 can be found on the Office of the Governor's website:

This page provides information directly from the Division of Human Resources on the hiring process for government jobs with the State of Idaho:
So, why is there a 'process' for getting a government job with the State of Idaho?
The reason is that the Idaho Legislature voted into place a merit system for hiring people into State of Idaho jobs. The merit system provides a way for applicants to be recruited, selected, retained, and promoted to classified State of Idaho jobs on the basis of merit and job performance. The Idaho Division of Human Resources has responsibility to oversee the process.
We will begin by defining some terms unique to state government and by giving you "behind the scenes" information that may help you understand the process. The State of Idaho consists of over 60 different agencies, commissions, and boards. These agencies hire people through the merit system. Apply for all jobs through this automated system. Check the left side of the announcement for specific contact information and to see which agency has posted the job announcement.
DHR then receives job applications, coordinates the review and scoring of them, and creates Registers and Hiring Lists. Agencies use Hiring Lists to schedule interviews and hire employees. Below is an illustration of the basic steps in the state hiring process.
The State of Idaho is an equal opportunity employer. Hiring is done without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or disability. In addition, preference may be given to veterans who qualify under state and federal laws and regulations. EOE/VETS/AA.
Well, that seems pretty simple, doesn't it? Actually, it is, but sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming and complicated. Click here to learn more about how to apply.
