How to Apply for Idaho State Government Jobs PDF Print E-mail

Two critical pieces of the application process are:

  • The Job Announcement
  • Completing the Application and Exam

The Job Announcement

Before you can apply for a job with the State of Idaho, the job has to be listed under State Jobs on the Division of Human Resources (DHR) website. Jobs that are "on announcement" will have an announcement number and are posted daily to DHR's web site as well as on the Department of Labor's Idaho Works web site.

Here's how it works…when a job is announced, specific information about the job, such as: opening and closing dates, location, minimum qualifications, and the salary level is included. That information is used to create the announcement, which is what you see posted to the DHR website under State Jobs.

How do I start the process?

Visit the Division of Human Resources website and search for a job announcement that interests you. Click on the job title to read a job announcement.  Here is a full list of Current Openings.  Notice there is an Apply Online button in the left margin of each job announcement.

Job Announcement Types

A vacant job can be announced as one of the following types:

  • Open Competitive - Jobs open to all applicants
  • Departmental Promotional - Jobs open only to classified department employees
  • Statewide Promotional - Jobs open to any classified state employee of any State of Idaho agency

Completing the Application: Online - Paper - Resume?!

Let's say there is a job on announcement that you are interested in pursuing. It's time to start the application process!

"Apply Online" is the online job application site for Idaho state jobs; it is secure, and confidential…and you can access it from most any computer. When you use Apply Online you will create a folder called "My Account" which stores your contact information, work history, past and current applications for jobs, exam scores, and Hiring Lists. This is a great way to follow the status of your state job application. The best way to start to Apply Online is to review the tutorial: "Help on How to Start". It provides you with step by step directions.

If you can't apply online, you may complete a paper application. You may fax, mail, or deliver your paper application to the agency listed on the posted announcement on or before the closing date. Be sure to check the address and fax information located on the left side of the announcement.

In most cases, resumes cannot be substituted for an application. However, resumes are welcome - and sometimes required - in addition to the application and exam. Always read the job announcement carefully for details on how to apply.

Applying through JobCentral.org or other job search site?

If you are applying through Monster.com, JobCentral.org, or another online job search site, you still must use Apply Online to complete a State of Idaho job application and exam for a specific job opening.

Things you need to do:

  • Read the job announcement carefully
  • Review agency contact information
  • Keep your online account contact information current
  • Submit a complete application
  • Complete the entire exam

You may have noticed that most job announcements require you to complete an exam. What's that about? Go to the Exams and Scores Section for more information!
