Most job announcements require completing an exam in addition to the application. In many cases you may preview the exam before you start the application process. Previewing an exam can give you a good idea if you are qualified - or even interested in the position!
Please note that there may be different exams for the same classification. An exam is usually in one of the following formats:Self-rating Exams: This exam is a questionnaire about tasks or duties which might be performed on the job for which you are applying. To answer the questions, you will choose from a list of self-rating statements. Some exams may require you to provide documentation to support the selections you make.
Rating of Training and Experience (TRAEX): This exam asks you to respond to a series of questions. The questions are about how your education, experience, and abilities relate to the minimum qualifications of the job for which you are applying. It is very important to be thorough in providing answers to the questions and to be specific when describing your role.
Resume Review: This exam asks you to address specific information (minimum qualifications) about your background in a resume format. Your resume will be reviewed and assigned a score. Be sure to include in your resume all jobs, education, and experience you have had that relate to the job for which you are applying. Oral Exams: These exams are often used to screen for positions where communication and relationships with the public are critical. Oral exams require you to answer questions in front of a panel of at least three board members who are knowledgeable about the work to be done. Oral Exams require that applicants go to a central testing location; they almost always occur in the city where the job opening exists.
Multiple Choice Exams (AKA Written Exams): This exam consists of multiple choice questions and requires you to analyze or think about a problem or situation to determine the best solution. Some multiple choice exams are online, some are held at a central testing location. In most cases, these are timed exams so plan your time well to answer all the questions.
Reasonable Accommodations If you have a disability that would limit or prevent you from taking an exam, please call 800-554-5627 to request accommodations.
Now What? You've completed the application and exam - what happens now? Well, if you applied online, you will see your score under 'My Account/Exams Summary' 2-3 weeks after the job has closed. If you wonder where your application is in the process, send an email to the email address listed on the left hand side of the announcement..
