On March 17, 2009 Governor Beverly Perdue said that the North Caroline state government workforce would be reduced by 1,000 jobs. Currently the state employs 95,000+ people, which includes full-time, part-time, trainees, and limited term positions These cuts are supposedly going to come from currently vacant positions and would not effect the existing workforce. The largest proposed cuts would come from:
- N.C. Department of Correction: 527 positions
- N.C. Department of Correction: 527
- N.C. Department of Health and Human Services: 90.25
- University of North Carolina: 73.6
- N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice: 51
- N.C. Department of Revenue: 31
- N.C. Department of Administration: 29
- N.C. Department of Agriculture: 26.7
- N.C. Department of Cultural Resources: 17.25
